Axle swap
will a 96 differential or axle fit my 01 blazer?
|
Is it from a 2wd, or 4wd? It would help us when answering your question if you posted what your truck is as well. The 2wd axle is 3" narrower than the 4wd axle.
Technically it should bolt right in. I would highly suggest that you take the diff cover off and inspect it before you go through the trouble of swapping it in. You don't want to get it in there only to find out that it's shot or on it's last legs. Open it up, clean it, and if it's good fill it up with new fluid and you'll be good to make the swap. |
the one im getting it out of is 4wd but mine is 2wd i just want the 3.73 gears without having to spend $400

Like EL stated above the 4x4 axle is about 3" wider so your rear tires will be sticking out a bit!

You can swap the differential carrier housing but make sure you know your doing. The gear lash will have to be set up properly.

axle swap
Would a 98 and up bravada axle fit 01 blazer?
|
Rear axle yes,be sure the axle ratio is the same as the front

Hold up guys, from what I have found is that the axles from a S-10 P/U 2WD are narrower than a blazer axle. I never found any info stating 4x4 axles are wider. there are 4x4 S-10's i just never looked at the axle width
|
the 4x4 axle is most definitely wider. depending on who you ask or who is telling, between 3 and 4 inches. plus it matters where you measure from. but i think its about 4 inches WIDER than 2wd rear axles. hence the off-set in the rims. if you look at the 4x4 rims, they are almost flat on the outside, the 2wd rims have a big dish in them to make up the difference. if you put a 4wd rear axle on a 2wd truck with 2wd rims, the tires will be sticking waay outside the wheel wells.
everything that i have read says that all the axles are just bolt ons. but you may have to figure out a parking brake depending on what you go with. and if you are planning on running 31's (like from your other thread) with a 3.73 gear, you wont have a problem. it works about to about 3.50. no problem considering they shipped some of these with 3.42's. |
Thanks Twip for the info. So in all there are 3 different axles to choose from....?
Standard s-10 axle. Blazer axle either 4x4 or not same width. Then the ZR-2 axle. The zr2 axle is what im currently running and its definatly wider than stock blazer axle... |

as far as i know the frame under a blazer and the frame under an s10 PU is the same thing. i also believe that the 2wd axle from both the blazer and the PU are the same size. this is the same for the 4x4 rear axle in both the blazer and PU which is about 3-4 inches wider than the 2 wheel drive axle.
the ZR2 rear axle is wider still than the blazer or s10 4x4 axle. i just dont know by how much. i have heard that its about 2 inches wider. which would make it about 6 inches or so wider than a 2wd axle. El Beautor is running a ZR2 rear and i have asked him about it because i want the 8.5 inch rear end. he said that with the ZR2 rear it pushed his tires out even further than it did with the regular 4x4 axle. his tires currently stick out past the fenders in the back. if i were to do it with stock rims, mine would probably be damn close to even with the fronts. and mine is 4x4 but NOT ZR2. so if i got the ZR2, it would solve everything that i am looking to do in that respect. so to answer your question condensed like you have 3 different axles 2wd either PU or Blazer <-- skinny, rims have big offset (they have a big dish in them) https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1372411976 4x4 either PU or Blazer <-- wider, rims have less offset. (they appear flatter from the outside) https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1372411976 and ZR2 rear. <-- widest of the 3. i wouldnt put 2wd rims on it....4x4 rims only. my.02 |

I'm fairly certain that the ZR2 axle is just over 3" wider than the 4x4 axle. My ZR2 axle is about a 1/2" wider than my stock 4x4 axle was with 1.25" spacers. Here is a perfectly to scale example of the 3 axle lengths: 2wd S10 and Blazer :|==O==|: 4wd S10 and Blazer :|===O===|: ZR2 S10 and Blazer :|====O====|: |
thanks El B. i didnt think about the bump stop cup.:icon_doh:
and i really like the absolutely perfect, to scale, axle drawings.:icon_lolsign: |
