When you say "fan noise", are you talking about a "chirp chirp chirp chirp" when you first start it up? If so that may not be the fan, but possibly the idler pulley or even the idler tensioner...

Ok--turns out it is a Powered Lumbar control. It also turns out my '97 has the same switch I just never used it and entirely forgot about it. :) Sorry about the noise!
