hate to state the obvious but there is a broken or shorted wire in the harness you mentioned. you did the hard part by finding the harness with the problem bc this is often the most time consuming...

Sounds to me like you fellas got yourselves a timing issue. i would set the engine to TDC and remove the dist. cap to set/make sure the plug in line abov the rotor is the first plug in the firing...
