I do not think the fuel gauge has anything to do with engine issues. The fuel gauge acting erratically is probably from the junk sending units that GM uses in the tank. Did you check the clamps on...

might need new brake pads. If it is the brakes, what you are hearing is the METAL sensor on the pad rubbing on your rotor. If you delay you will ruin the rotors. 36,000 is typcal for brakes
