I'll have to put it back on ramps tomorrow and try this to confirm but I'm pretty sure when I unhooked the white plug (4 prongs) and then turned the ignition on that the gauge didn't move.

Driver's side, behind the rear axle, up before the bumper. It's about the size of a lunchbox with rubber hoses going into it.

I assume at one point mine had a metal box or something around it but...

On mine I think it was down at the transfer case. It was 'sticking' so it never fully disengaged and kept clicking like two gears that almost mesh.

I'm embarrassed to say I had the dealership...

If you put it into 4x4 and the sound goes away it might be the solenoid that controls the 4x4. That's what it was for me.

Doubt it's a wheel bearing as being in 4x4 or not doesn't make a...

I don't remember the brand but it was from the local auto place. I tq'd the nut to 100 lbs. Found out later it should be 103 but doubt the 3lbs is what the problem is :-)

Specifically the 3 that hold the wheel hub to the spindle.

I think they are all 18mm but one was so rusty last time I had to use a 17mm to get it off. Would like to replace all three this weekend...

I hooked mine back up and was all set to try the tap test...wouldn't you know it...runs just fine at the moment.

I will leave it hooked up and if it freaks out again I have my jumper in the center...
