I think you might be having the same problem as on the A/C problem thread sounds like there is a blockage in one of the A/C lines. This causes the compressor to short cycle like that.

I'd get a second opinion. Compressors to go out but I wouldn't spend that kind of money till I knew for sure that it was the compressor. First of all you can't charge the system without the A/C...
