Ok, I'm going to jump to the punch line: How long will u-joints last without retaining rings?

I askbecause I've got a98 2wdS-10 with 130k miles that has a loudclank / rattlesound at speedsabove...

agibson, thank you for the quick reply! I took it to a 3rd shop and had them specifically look at the u-joints. Instead of the joints, they recommended replacing: 2 motor mounts, 1 transmission...

I'm experiencing sporadic clanking or bangingsounds at speeds above 45mph. The faster I drive, the more frequent the noise occurs. Although I'm notpositive, I believe it's coming from the front end....
