If your fluid looks like your engine oil dark, your trans is probably toast. That's what happened to my 99 K1500, opened up the pan to do a fluid change and my red atf was black and there was chunks...

man that sucks, what I did is instead of spending $500 to fix my pump, I ended up going through Geared Up Transmission, spend $1050 to get a warranty and a new converter.
