I know it may be a given, but be sure and belch the air out of your cooling system. A little bit of air will really cause some temp spikes.

The noise you heard is the water circulating through the heater core. Not sure about smoking though. If windshield is fogging from moisture, it's probably a leaking core. You should be smelling...

You're not alone, the pitman arm design on these is notorious for having a bit of slop. Even with everything in top shape, there can be a little play.
