Have you checked all the other bulbs that run off the same fuse? I think the cargo lamp, glove box lamp, visor mirror lamps, and some others get power from that fuse.

I think the light sensor had a diode in it. Maybe try installing a diode in series with your resistor. Try it both ways to before soldering/crimping it in place (diodes are directional).

You can probably forget the alternator...you said it still cranks strong after it died, but if the alternator went out and the battery was drained then it would crank really slowly or not at...
