It's the drive shaft going from the transfer case to the front end. The vehicle has 153k miles on it and I only use the 4wd a handful of time in the winter just wondering how it could go bad

I too have started hearing a wierd noise coming from the front of my 2000 4.3 4wd Blazer.It seems to only occur from 30-50 mph. It sounds like something is rattleing I cant "feel" it in the steering...

That is actually called the ignition. The key turns a gear that turns another gear in the ignition starter switch. they connect together but are two seperate parts so you dont need to change your key...
