Apparently, the wire for the sending unit must have got pinched or stretched when pulling the old motor. The shielding was intact but the wire strands were broken.

Thanks for your response. I did not change the oil pump with the motor. Motor was completely intact. I could turn the pump fine with a screw driver - which I need to do to line up the distributor....

Turns out I had two problems happening at the same time. I thought the tranny fluid in my vacuum lines was what was affecting the performance but it turns out the catalytic convertor was plugged.
