I have been dealing with this issue as well. First things first. Have you checked all vacuum hoses for leaks as well as the 4X4 actuator for a broken diaphragm?

Crazy, but when I disconnected the pwr. seat harness at the carpet and pushed the ground wire back up into the socket and reinstalled, the gas gauge worked! Quick fix that I was very thankful for.
