I could use a modified lever from a 1970s Camaro to accept the linkage, that way I could use the dash gear indicator as no indicator down here...

Check the temp sensor mounted on the grille support. Make sure it's plugged in, the body shop may have forgotten.

You can swap all the internals, but it might be easier to swap the doors. You will have to run the wiring, which means taking out the dash, carpet, kick panels, e-brake, B pillar panels...

Ordinarily I would not advise to install anything aftermarket. But in this case, it's your most feasible option.

Is it a CUCV (Military) or regular K5? An aftermarket system isn't too bad to install. Just the room under a CUCV Blazer makes things a little more difficult due to the two batteries.
