14 bolt rear differential
Just doing a fluid and gasket change on my 91 K5. All cleaned up and ready to re-assemble. The parts guy at the store didn't believe me when I mentioned I had a cast looking cover. He asked if he could check to make sure. He was a little jealous after that when he saw the 14 bolt cast HD cover.

I'm jealous. I only have 13 bolts. :p

But one of the selling points was the upgrades it already has installed. Thats a nice cover! Looks like they got rid of the bottom bolt of a 14 bolt. |

That's a Crane cover that's made for a shaved housing. By cutting off the bottom lip from the housing, I gained a little over an inch of clearance. There are also shave kits available that take off even more, but they require you to weld a plate on the bottom and machine down the OD of the ring gear. I didn't really think it was worth the trouble and the potential problems for a relatively small amount of additional clearance. |
