98 Blazer stuck in 4wd

Ok here you go, 98 blazer ls 4dr 4x4. According to the buttons on the dash its stuck in 4wd. Its actually in 2wd. I have no clue where to begin. I can work on vehichles, but automatics, transfer cases, and differentials are all something I have yet to work on. I do know that I need to change the driver side wheel bearing and the tube seal leaks. I keep gear oil in the front differential.

Hi Aaron,
In my situation I have 3 buttons on dash. If I push H4wd , I hear a noise from the transfer case. If I push L4wd I hear a louder noise from the transfer case. Push 2wd and I hear a transfer case noise getting out of 4wd. All my lights work properly on dash but my 4wd in diferential would not engage even though the lights said it went into 4wd. I found out that my shift fork area was bad in diff area. The gear that attaches to the passenger side axle shaft was all torn up as well as some thrust washers. Fortunately for me nothing else was glaring bad. I bought a kit made by Dorman 600-561, cleaned up everything, new passenger axle seal, and put everything back together. My 4wd works now by pulling cable end under battery. I have to do some work on the vacuum lines to hopefully complete the job. I have found many good helpfull posts on this website and by using google to search others.
Good luck with your quest.

David
