How do they settle on all these torque values...I mean 103?? I guess 104 ft/lbs was just too tight..might strip a thread, but 102..yep that sucker would work itself right off the axle;)

The 103FtLbs is from the conversion from metric - 140Nm == 103FtLbs. The torque value is a baseline value calculated from the number of threads engaged, the diameter of the threads, and the loads associated with the connection.

Ahhhh so there's a formula! I feel better about GM now..no arbitrary values:D

Well, atleast that is what I do... It also highly depends on the two materials.

I know this is an old thread but you seem to have the answer I am looking for but the link is now dead.
Is this information still available?

How much damage can you do to the hub if it is over tightened?
