Default Differential Code

i need to replace my bearings and seals on my rear diff.
98 blazer 4x4 4door

in my glove box it says G80, so i know i have this diff.
now, at the auto part store, they ask for wich ring gear i have, and if its a C, K, G(?) diff.

how am i suppose to know if its a C or a K and gear size ?
(without opening the diff)

thanks for your help.

ho one more thing, i dont have a puller, but i saw a vid that the guy removed both axle and used a long bar to pound the bearings out of the axle tube, what you think about that ?

pull the rotor off and look at the oil seal, you'll be able to tell then if C or K, and for ring size

if you're still unsure look here http://www.blazinlow.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42856

if you have a place that loans tools, autozone, VIP, many others, you can rent a axle bearing set and a slide hammer, works wonders.

see this video, it's for a ford ranger, but the tools he uses makes a world of difference. when you remove the bearing just do both the bearing and seal at the same time pulling them together.

Being a 4wd 4dr 98+ truck, your options are limited. The rear axle in your truck is a 7.625" ring gear axle. If you really need to find the stamping code, it will be on the axle tube somewhere. Locations don't seem to be all that consistent, but typically they are on the front of the axle on the passenger side from my experience.

thanks a lot ! again, this website has helped me so much !

so i found that i have:
G80 rear diff
3.73 gear ratio
7.625 ring gear

now i only need the C, K or whatever code is stamped on the ring gear(or the axle tube as you mentioned, i will look at that later today)

coolasice , your saying it will be tamped near the oil seal ? if so, where ?(on the seal, tube, flange, axle ?)

thanks for all and any help !

no, the oil seals are drastically different, one has a lip and the other doesn't, look on timken or national oil seal website, you can see the difference in seals

part number 710166

or 8660S

I just bought both and returned the ones that didn't fit...

update, i replaced my bearings, seals and 1 axle.

drain plug was rusted/stripped but with some heat from a propane torch and my electric impact gun i got it loose.
also, the slide puller i rented had the 3 tips worn so it slipped off the bearings a couple times but i finally got them out.
the passenger side axle had a huge groove in it(thats the side that leaked oil)
it didnt made a lot of noise, i was surprised when i saw this...

now, i still have one last question.
the big shaft that holds the axles in the diff is worn. i removed the burrs and reinstalled it. i would like to know whats the cause to this, and will my diff last a couple more years !?
