Front end noise in 2wd change to 4wd and noise goes away!

Was driving in 2wd and a had a clunking noise in the front end. pulled over checked everything nothing noticeable. Drove and still had noise . Put it int 4x4 and noise went away. Drove it home in 4x4. Took it to work in 4x4 and pulled it over the pit and could not see any lose cv joints checked front hub bearings no play. Took it back out for test drive put it back into 2wd and no noise. Have drove it for 20 miles and can not get noise to come back. Does anyone have a sugestion. This is on a 98 balzer with 4x4 on the fly push buton on the dash.

Most likely cause is a partially engaged shift collar inside the front axle. Moving from 2wd to 4wd and back again probably unstuck it and returned it to is normal position when in 2wd.

Is this something that is easy to repair? I talked to a shop today and they said the problem was a y yoke part made of some type of plastic. ( If anyone knows the name of this I would love to know) They said it would be around $950.00 to repair. That seems a little high. Any help would be great THANKS .

I would first try to lube up the front cable and work it back and forth. It likely just stuck and needs to be lubed up some.

I will try that sounds much cheaper. Is the cable you are talking about hard to find?

It runs from the front axle to up under the battery tray. The easiest way to lubricate it is with the battery and tray removed.
