Loose steering
I've got very sluggish steering. With the truck off tires on the ground steering is tight with only an inch or so play. But when its in 4low even on level smooth surface the front tires go there seperate ways. New pitman idler arm And all 4 tie rods along with 4 ball joints tires are good half life.can anyone help?

To check for steering play have the engine running. Get a helper to turn the wheel back and forth within the zone of play :icon_steer:
Then you watch from underneath to see where the play is.....idler arm, pitman arm, steering box...etc. It works best with the vehicle on the ground so its under load. Another thing to do is jack up each side and grab the wheels trying to move them side to side. |
I'm having the same problem with mine but I think most of the play is within the steering box itself. To this point I have been able to find rebuild kits however I have not found any parts that would be considered 'wear' parts such as the internal gears.
You'll also want to make sure the rag joint is not worn out as well. I have the mounts for a steering stabilizer on my '95. I've been trying to find out if the steering slop is related to the fact that there are not steering stabilizers installed. It seems that the ZR2 has them but are those worn out similar to regular 4wd steering systems? |
