Need some questions answered quick!
 

Hey guys!

I was planning on changing fluids on my differentials, transfer case, and manual transmission tomorrow but I have some conflicting information. Im hoping someone can chime in before tomorrow afternoon rolls around.

First of all Im running a 2000 Blazer ZR2.

Here are some of my questions...

1) Torque Wrench. Is it really necessary?
2) I don't have a breaker bar but if I need one should I buy a spare plug and expect the worst?
3) Do I really need to change the washer on the transmission drain plug?
4) Put thread lock on the transfer case right?


Ive been told you don't need to replace the gasket on the rear differential. Just pop open the cover. Dump the oil and replace it. One person advised this saying that swapping gaskets is asking for trouble. Not sure if I buy that.
Same person said not to use brake cleaner or solvents to clean the differential out. I can understand this one as I wouldn't want some to stay in the differential. Your thoughts?

Im assuming manual transmissions work on drain and fill plugs and I don't need to flush them?

As you can see Ive gotten lots of contradicting advice. Hoping to set it straight by morning and start swinging wrenches. If no one responds Ill just have to rely on common sense I guess.

Well in my experience on changing fluids is...
I never used a torque wrench....and always use a new gasket.
Also I have not ever seen a drain plug on a stock tranny pan
On these blazers....tip #1.. be careful removing the tranny pan.
If its a 4x4 there is not a lot of room because of the crossmember
And have heard stories of people messing up one of the shift solinoids..
Tip #2.. dont over tighen the pan bolts...bolts are steel
Tranny body is Aluminum...I use a stubby ratchet so I cant
Over torque the bolts.....if your transfer case is the 4button
Type use only the fluid from the GM dealer called Autotrak
Fluid...
