Default Play in steering?

I just bought a 1999 Blazer LT 4WD. It's a great truck. It does seem to have a bit of extra play in the steering. Anybody addressed this already? Any tips? The previous owner said he had the play addressed, but it still seems a bit loose to me.

Could be a number of things, the rag joint on the steering shaft, the gear box ect. If you do not know much about cars your best bet is take it to a shop and get the front end looked at.

Thanks for the reply. I'm no mechanic, so I'll drop it by the shop and see what they say.

Please post what your shop finds and if the repair fixed the 'play in steering' problem. That way the others on the list who have the same problem will have an idea what to check on their Blazer. Thanks!

I took it to the shop on 2/17/16, and they replaced an idler arm. They said the steering box looked good and the other idler arm was in good shape. It tightened the steering up a lot. I've been driving it a couple weeks, and it's way better. (The steering still seems a bit loose to me, but that might be because I'm used to driving a newer car with sport tuning and suspension.)

On these trucks, the rag joint is a common problem and fairly easy to replace. Also check the outer tie rod ends. BTW how many miles on this 1999?

Thanks for the suggestions Jim. My Blazer has a little more than 164,000 miles.
