Rear axle - c-clips
 

Hi all,

CHEVY BLAZER S-10 (1994) 4x4 rear axle.

Now I have my rear axle down and disassembled.

Once I had the C-clip retainers of the axle shafts out the omnipresent question arises. What is the maximum clearance?

The C-clips are worn on both sides. Does somebody have experience in changing c-clips to get rid of the excessive clearance?
The axle shafts look o.k. the groove and button end are o.k. just the c-clips worn a bit.

Any indication or link to manuals or own experience is welcome.

The c-clips should fit well into the slot on the end of the axle shat. If they are very loose, you should replace them. They are cheap enough.

You could put c-clip eliminators in and forget about the end play.

Now I'm not so very good with inch measurements but will give some info in metrics anyway

The groove at the button end looks pretty good. Spaces about 5 mm (1/5") the C-clip has a clearance of at least 1.5 mm (1/15") way too much in my opinion. While the wear on the c-clip itself is only maybe two to three tenths of a millimeter 2/10 mm - now I'm in trouble with the inch thingy... ;)

So I guess that even from factory they come with rather a lot of clearance. I may get new clips bringing the clearance down to a total of 2/10 mm or less. Should have nearly no clearance in my opinion. I'll probably just turn the clips around.

Depending on how the clearances in the differential housing are the clips can not fit perfectly into the slot, else you can not push the axle out enough to slide the central axle back in. The whole contraption is a bit what we call "baschtel" (means some assembly done in a hurry and not so well conceived).
