Replaced CV Axle on Passenger Side
I just got finished replacing the passenger side CV Axle. I followed the tech articles in this forum for guidance. I was not able to remove the axle with the steering knuckle in place. However, I was able to remove the axle by removing the tie rod end and upper ball joint. But when I was trying to insert the new axle I did not have enough oomph to push the axle all the way in. I ended up removing the steering knuckle and removing the lower shock bolt to give me more room to grab the tripod and push and I got the axle seated.
When I removed the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle I notice that the ball joint was pretty loose. So ended up replacing the lower ball joint as well. The only other issue I had was that I was not able to get my torque wrench on the upper ball joint castle nut due to interference with the axle shaft. I just ended up using a long handle box end wrench and getting the nut good and tight. (A torque adapter for the torque wrench would have done the job) |
I dunno if your new CVs came with it, but I know the OEM ones have a little lip in the side of them, what I did was took a long prybar and hammered it in place using the lip on the side of the CV, I think thats why that lip is there.

I do not know about the lip or not but I do have the factory service manual and the manual says to grab the tripod and push in the shaft until it is seated. After I struggled a little bit I went and took a break and checked the service manual for the proper way to seat the shaft. When I was able to get a good grip on the inner tripod housing
and a little effort it popped right in. |
