Replacing Power Steering Fluid, 2001 Blazer
 

I recently took my Blazer to the shop to have the rear differential gasket replaced. Among a long laundry list of things to do (totalling over $1,000, they always come up with at least a grand worth of repairs :icon_doh:) they recommended flushing the powersteering fluid as a "maintenance item" for a vehicle with 100K miles.

How difficult is it to replace the power steering fluid yourself? Does it take special tools?

I am fairly mechanically inclined, although I don't have much time under the hood.

I simply suck it out of the pump with a turkey baster and refill with fresh fluid... do this 4 or 5 times over a few days and the fluid becomes pretty darn clean. Not exactly the way the pro's do it but effective just the same.

They sell hand pumps at most autoparts stores too. I have one that cost something like $15 quite a few years ago. If you are married, your wife may not like you using her turkey baster!
