Transfer Case Fluid?
 

So I tried searching for the answer first, but came up empty handed. So here it is, I have a 2000 Blazer LT 4x4. I am wondering aboutthe fluid that is used in the transfer case? I have the auto 4x4 button along with the typical 4x4 buttons if that helps? I was told a while ago by the shop that does my oil changes to use ATF, but just today (during a oil change LOL) I was told the autotrack II stuff. So which would it be? Thanks for any responses in advance.

Autotrak 2 only. You could get some shuddering from the t-case during parking lot maneuvers when in A4wd if regular ATF is used which would result in premature wear on the clutch packs.

A drain and refill will require 2.4qts of Autotrak 2 (GM part # 12378396 - 1 quart).

Be aware that the fluid that will come out when draining may be red, but rest assured that it is the original Autotrak fluid which has been updated to Autotrak2 which is blue in color. The change to the color was made so that people did not mistakenly put in ATF.

I bought my 95 blazer 3 years ago. when i first bought i did everything you could think of including a trans fluid change. when i did that i noticed that the fluid level was really low. since it had 115k on it i figured id drain the transfer case when i did that nearly 4 to 5 more quarts came out. so my dads been a tech for nearly 30 yrs so i pulled the transfer case and the seal was bad. anyways i refilled it with straight trans fluid, drove 15000 miles in the 3 years, and ive used the 4wd a lot off-roadin and drivin in the snow, and i just changed the fluid before i drove out here to wyoming with ATF and have been offroading here and ive had no problems with my transfer case and it is quiet as hell.

Completely different transfer case in your vehicle. The Auto4wd and the AWD transfer cases have clutch packs for their automatic functionality. That is where the specific friction modifiers and formulation of the Autotrak II fluid comes into play. ATF is not suitable for these transfer cases.

I have a 1999 Blazer LT with auto 4 wheel button plus 4 Hi, 4Lo and 2WD. My problem is it started to shudder on Parking lot manuevers as mentioned above. I suspected it was still in 4WD when it showed that it was in 2WD. A friend disconnected the vacuum linewhich causes it to switch from 2 to 4 WD, sure enough the shudder went away. It was stuck in 4WD. Now I want to get it fixed. The mechanic said the vacuum solenoid was bad and replaced. My problem has come back. Now he mentions the fluid in the tranfer case, could be the problem. What I'm seeing in this forum, seems like that could be true. Any suggestions???

Ok, im kinda lost here. Winter is coming up and I want to have my truck ready for it, so I was thinking about checking the fluid in the transfer case. What fluid should I use in my '96? It only has 3 buttons: 2 hi, 4 hi, and 4 lo.

For the 3 button t-case, if I remember right, you can use the Autotrak 2 or ATF.... I think that's what my Haynes manual said... I'll double check again when I wake up, if someone doesn't beat me to it...

I put in the Autotrak 2 stuff... Which was a pretty blue color!

I also had the fluid spray far enough back to splash the rear diff when I took the drain plug out... Good thing I hardly ran it after I sank it in the river, lmao.
