transfer case stuck in 4 low

i have a 91 blazer with a 4.3 auto, and a transfer case that is stuck in 4 low. any ideas where i start looking to fix this problem? one mechanic told me that i have to pull the front diff apart, but that didnt make any sense to me, so i am looking for a second (or more) opinion. thanks (it has an electonic shift button on the dash)

RE: transfer case stuck in 4 low

Well ive had some limited success with this but its worth a try. Press and hold in the 2 hi button while shifting back and forth from neutral to drive. This should knock the t-case free and should hopefully get you into 2hi. Now if it sounds like its not even trying to shift to 2hi (ie no sound from under the truck) the solenoid could be shot. If thats the case take it to a shop that specializes in 4x4's so they wont jack ya around and have them check it out. I havent replaced the solenoid myself but im told its easy to replace and moderately cheap. Hope that provides some help.

the front diff has nothing to do with the transfer case being in 4 lo. to get it out of four low you have to remove the electric shift motor from the t-case, and shift the t-case manually. although,I wouldn't suggest doing that if you don't really know what you are doing. also do NOT try to bench test the electric shift motor. it will over travel and will be ruined

RE: transfer case stuck in 4 low

i was having the same problem while testing the 4x4 with my 2000 2 door i just bought, i took it out on a back road and it went into 4hi fine and Auto4x4 fine but i switched into 4low and it wouldnt shift out, good thing i wasnt far from home at all. but the light for 4low just flashed and would shift out... so in my attempt to fix itmyself this site was my first stop... Rcars2, that post really saved me some head aches and did solve my problem for the time being, but i was wondering if you could give any light into what could havecaused the peroblem???
