Default Trouble Engaging 4x4

I recently purchased a '89 Blazer S10. And I'm not sure if this is a problem, or just a quirk of Blazers, but sometimes I have difficulty switching to 4w hi. Sometimes it engages smoothly, other times, I have to play with it a little. Also, when I try to go to 4w lo, I can hear the transfer case grinding. Any opinions?

How good does it shift if you are slightly moving? Noting that whenever you shift ranges (HI to LO or LO to HI), the transmission should be in neutral.

It shifts pretty good when I'm slightly moving, and it shifts fine when I get it into 4 wheel drive. I knew you have to be in neutral to switch ranges, but even from 2hi to 4hi It gives me trouble sometimes.
