'67 289 mustang vs. 01 blazer

hey guys friend w/ a mustang just challenged me to a race he has a '67 mustang 289 A code not the C code or K code (hi-po). hes running 225 hp stock and is going to put headers a flowmaster exhaust on it he also has completely refurbed the engine so carbon buildup will not be an issue for him what do u guys think. no money or anything just for fun and we might go to the track cuz he wants to do a few runs with it aswell. im sure hes got loads of trq. but what will i need to watch for during the race will i pull out ahead in the beginning or what thats what usually happens and what about the upgrades will he smoke me with his stang or will i hold my own. swartlkk i would like to hear ur opinion on this one. thanks everyone

Well, he has you on weight and hp.

1967 Mustang Code A engine stats:
225hp Challenger Special 289ci V-8 (Optional, Code A)
4.00in bore x 2.87in stroke
10.0:1 Compression Ratio
Premium fuel
Four-barrel carburetor
Automatic Choke
Self-adjusting Valves with Hydraulic Lifters
225 HP @ 4800rpm; 305lb-ft @ 3200rpm

1967 Mustang Curb Weight ~3400lbs

2001 Blazer stats (stock) 190 HP @ 4,400 rpm; 250 lb-ft @ 2,800 rpm and a curb weight of ~4100lbs.

Your launch depends on the transmission and rear axle ratio of the Mustang and your rear gear as well. If the mustang has a manual tranny, then the launch is completely up to the skill of the driver as is each and every shift down the 1/4.

Given a decent driver, the Mustang shouldn't have a problem handily beating you down the 1/4. You may jump out at the start if you hit the lights right, but he should run you down before he hits second, then he should be gone.

ok my rear gears are 3.42 and he has a 4 sp auto if that helps u figure out i hear that those cars are alot faster if u have a good shifting driver vs. an auto. just wondering if u know about what the 1/4 mile time is on those anyways. also what if i raced him stock and thanks alot for the help swartlkk u bring alot of knowledge to this forum and its greatly appreciated

Are you sure he has a 4-spd auto??? Is it a modern transmission? I don't think that Ford had a 4spd auto back then...

TRANSMISSIONS

Three-speed manual transmissions are included as standard equipment throughout with all engines except for the 289 High-Performance and 390 GT V-8's. These transmissions are the constant-mesh type that fully synchronize in all forward gears.

Available with all engines, the smooth shifting Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic transmission features an extremely versatile shift pattern for the 1967 Ford Mustang. This shifting arrangement permits both manual and fully automatic operation - whichever the driver desires for the immediate road conditions or driving situation.

A four-speed constant-mesh manual transmission is optional with all engines except the 200 CI six cylinder. This transmission is fully synchronized in all forward gears, permitting up shifts and downshifts at reasonable car speeds without gear clash or noise. When ordered with the 289 4V High-Performance or 390 4V engine it will include a trip odometer and tachometer.
The Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic would be the 3spd auto... I think... I believe it came in both a C-4 and C-6 where the C-6 is a heavier duty unit.

Ok, Um.. I don't know whether to believe this or not, but the info I found was that a stock 1966 Mustang 289/auto runs 10.7 0-60 and around 17.9 in the 1/4. It would be a driver's race with those numbers. Now a '64 289/4spd runs 7.5 0-60 and 15.7 in the 1/4. That is more than enough stock to wipe out a stock Blazer by about 2 seconds in the 1/4. These numbers seem way too far apart to me, but it could be because of the inefficiency of the early autos...

ok i know for a fact its a c4 tranny in there i did some research to and the only reason i thought it was a 4 speed auto is because he thought it was but hes not the brightest man on earth:D. so that would mean its a 3 spd i read that 0-60 in those was 10.9 thats why it brought me to believe i could be ok racing him my other friend has a '69 cobra jet, a '70 boss 302, and a '65 289 hertz rental so maybe he would have some knowledge on this matter. he thought i would win

Ok, given that it is a C-4 3spd auto, it'll pretty much be a drivers race stock for stock.

With headers and an exhaust, he'll probably win. Now when he refurb'd the engine, did he put all stock components back in?

289s can be very stout powerplants in the early Mustangs. I have a friend that I used to work with that has a '67 convertible with a built 289. Nothing special, but with the 4spd manual tranny and the go-fast goodies in the motor, that car would give my Bonneville, in it's close to stock state, a run for it's money in the 1/4. I'd basically need to have him screw up the launch or shifts to win...

i see what u mean yes all stock except the upgrades i told u about im thinking it wont be to fast although he wont have alot of restriction on the exhaust side of things and he will have the headers how much do u think headers will gain him.
