My Blazer vs. The 1/8th Mile
Took my blazer for its second run on the 1/8th mile drag strip south of me (Countyline Dragway, on the boarder with broward county and miami dade, FL)!
the first time i maxed out at 62 mph and just under 12 seconds (exact times lost). since then, i have put a High-flow catalytic converter and high performance muffler, both from magnaflow. tonight was test and tune so i decided to give it another go: atmosphere temp: 63-70 degrees F competitors: Cadillac CTS-V, Mustang foxbody, and pontiac G-6 my only win was actually against the Cadillac: Reaction time: C=.382 B=.806 60 foot time: C=2.856 B=2.394 Trap MPH: C=77.3 B=62.5 Elapsed time: 11.866 B=11.069 Winner even though it was because he shifted badly from 1st to 2nd, i still had better acceleration from a standstill in first gear, and i was still proud of myself afterwards! lol the mustang was fully "pro street" so i didnt stand a chance... but thats when i got my best speed, clocking me in at 79 mph and total time of 8.941... most were around 63 though. keep in mind there's always the possibility that i mixed somethings up (i will mark down which lane i was in for each time card after each drag race next time) any comments welcome, and experiences welcome too! |
Good for you! Some guys will drag anything!
I was pleased to see you're 2wd, though. You're not totally crazy. j/k. Actually it makes more sense to me than the guy with yet another 5.0 in a ratted out Fox. And not everyone can afford to put $12,000 into a $3000 MarkVIII to turn 10.5 quarters.. so you're good in my eyes. |
lol i even got a compliment from a couple guys about my blazer "hey that thing's pretty quick!" lol
one day i'll make another post on a quarter mile, but my nearest quarter mile drag strip is about 2 hours away... for now sticking to the eighth-mile, lol hey, maybe one day i can afford a supercharger for my blazer! :D my only problem with superchargers is the loud whine/squeaking it makes... can they be "disengaged" (turned off... like the air conditioner) so that i can drive it normally? if so then i'm all in! |
your still not totally crazy. theres a club of people somewhere in the midwest that meet up and drag their daily driver blazers. these things are built. it was on powerblock on spike a last year. ever since i saw that i had a new respect for these lil things lol. they have potencial to make serious power
|
When I got my supercharger I sent a vid link to the guy I got it from & asked if it sounds right because it had been rebuilt. Al @ Wynjammer had a bad shipment of bearings & the only real way to know if they're bad is time - long story short he rebuilt it & I have it now. So I asked the guy if it sounded right, he said "yeah it sounds perfect, that's the sound that makes you smile!"
As for disconnecting them yes & no, they're belt driven so that would be a PITA & you have to get the PCM tuned for the added air pressure so it wouldn't run properly with the supercharger not running. WTG on running the 1/8! When I get this one tuned up & things tweeked I might take it to the strip just north of here in the summer. WTF is THAT doing here?! :icon_stooge: What a goof in a 4WD lifted blazer. lol :icon_redface: Oh, now I see. :icon_that: |

ok... i might just have to listen to one on a blazer in person, since i've only ever heard them through youtube (and you know how video's can distort sound, lol).
hey, considering there was a guy in a giant lifted H2 hummer (had to have been a 6"+ lift) i dont think a blazer is/was too out of place! lol maybe after i get an oil change (2,000 miles overdue :icon_redface:) i might get slightly better times. i'm going again tonight, but just to watch because their racing jet cars and trucks! i'll try to get pics and video of them... |
i have always wanted to take my 8in lifted blazer on 33s to the 1/4 mile strip just to see my times. But didnt want to be "that" guy. lol After i finish the v8 swap this winter i will have to go for sure though.

What would be the performance from stock be for a v8 swap vs a supercharger? |
No disrespect towards you or your Blazer, but you got lucky. Obviously the driver of the CTS-V was either asleep at the switch and/or had a lot of wheel spin out of the box. The elapse time and mph you posted are way off for the average capabilities of that car. A CTS-V will pull down a 8.xxx 1/8 mile time and a 12.xxx 1/4 mile run at 11x mph all day long without breaking a sweat. The 2012 CTS-V is only a couple tens of a second slower than a new Mustang GT500. Talk about a wolf in sheep clothing. ;)

:icon_shrug: i did get lucky, i'll admit it :D |
Sounds like fun, I took my completely stock vette to the 1/8 mile this year and something for you to work towards is beating my (best) terrible time of 8.95 at 79.67 mph on all season Michellin Pilot Sport street tires, I have the factory performance axle ratio of 3:42 which makes for good slightly squeaky launches, vette has good grip with 275 wide tires
I had an absolute blast too especially after I made it to top 8 and busted out beating a LS1 modified 92 Firebird with free flow exhaust which was originally an LT1 car My step son wants to take his 2006 Tralblazer SS AWD and see if he can beat my time. I am hoping to get an LS3 crate engine for the vette and then put the old LS1 in my blazer someday. Like they did on PowerBlock with the 5.3 in the 4wd blazer I am definately still considering a V8 2wd 2dr blazer still too It's all fun!!!! Thank you for sharing your story! Keep enjoying it!!! and telling the stories of your fun, we all enjoy reading ! |
OP, you definitely got your times mixed up with the Mustang. No way in hell you trapped 79 MPH in a blazer. Sounds like you had a blast though and that's all that matters.
99blklt4wd, your Vette has a lot more in it for sure, even completely stock. My bone stock 2000 SS Camaro ran mid-low 13's in the 1/4 mile in terrible air. |

My bone stock 2000 SS Camaro ran mid-low 13's in the 1/4 mile in terrible air. it also could have been a glitch in the timing program... maybe it clipped me farther down the track? lol like you said, i had fun :D oh and yes, a corvette engine in a blazer would be wicked! |
guys around here drag race lifted trucks and suvs every weekend at muncie speedway theres a guy up there all the time with cummins dodge 3/4 ton slayin them at the traps i will look for video he decimates everything in the other lane http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9gzqV2ENxE
|
Nice, but what i really want to see is your supercharged blazer on the strip! lol
thats a bada** truck, but the mustank (lol, jk, mustangs are awesome... still prefer my chevys though) was probably stock or close to it... |
sometime i will get it up there and make a few runs but im still working on more power 36lb fuel injection and 2 more lbs of boost its gonna be much faster before i take her to the strip now its a jaw dropper soon will be a heartbreaker
|
weird times
I had a 86 astro van fully gutted and smallblock chevy with double hump heads geared 3.08 and th350 tranny and ran only 8.60 in 1/8mile without nitrous and 9.0's in 1/8 with it but spinning was all the way too end of track. Very fun too drive considering on 40mph rolls on streets I would jump a car length on 02 lightning with stage4 ported blower on 18psi and headers back, shiftkit in the 4r100 and stall converter 4.10 gears and thats without nitrous being used. I have a 97 blazer im buying soon and wondering how quick it would be with a supercharger? can they break into 9's in 1/8 without spending ****load? It is a 4dr and 4x4 too what u think?
|
After reading this i want to take my xtreme to the track just to see wht it runs its all stock and now im gonna research the closest tracks near me :)
|
97 blazer 10.95 sad
Well I bought the blazer and owned it for a while now its a 97 blazer 4dr 4x4 lt and it does [email protected] has custom cai and its slow but wasnt built for speed just for driving in bad weather and putting nice stereo systems lol.. Could some others post there times so I can see if mine is about worn out or still decently running thanks folks and keep on blazzin hehe
|
It's not about how fast but how consistant! I had a friend of mine take his rental car into the semi finals of the super chevy show in Atlanta about 15 years ago in a Corsica. He had the AC on and took off in drive and was running something like 22.5 at 78mph (1/4 mile). He was so far down the track when the other guy took off they kept breaking out trying to run him down! By the third round the place was going nuts! Anyway - it's all about the fun.

Wow... didn't realize how long ago I made this thread! Well, now I have a little extra cash from a trip I didn't take (didn't save up quite enough) and plan on getting an intake upgrade. So, what I might do is swing by the track and get a few more time slips (for accuracy's sake, I wasn't really sure how to read them when I made this thread). Then, do the upgrade and take it back to the track to see if there's any improvement.
I don't want this thread to die! Keep up with the interesting stories and please update if you can! |
blazer man make sure you get a good heat shield installed if you do a cold air intake becouse otherwise stock airbox with some modifying is better lol.. Also the throttlebody has the defuser it dont gain u no hp taking it out it just makes the throttle more twitchy
|
Actually, I have the opportunity to get a k&n intake for only about $180 (before tax) and it comes with the heat shield (series 57 intake) so that I shouldn't have to worry about. Ordering it tomorrow!
Hopefully I'll be able to hit the track Friday and/or saturday before installing the intake. |
K&N air intake is ordered! should arrive mid next week. If I make it to the track this weekend I'll post my times here. Should I start a new thread after the install?
|
Either way. This area doesn't see much action.
|
Might be that not too many blazers see competition builds.
I'd go and race my very stock 1994 4x4 Blazer S10 with 175k anytimes just for the fun and to see what times it get. No drag-strips here tough. These cars have been built to last and to run low on gas. Low RPM max power and restrictions everywhere. Let somebody build it up nicely, eventually with a blower and see what it makes. Still waiting for money and a place to build mine. I'll not slip that goal but it will take some more time. Don't lift it, put it down as much as possible to reduce aerodynamic drag. Get rid of the cooling fan and change to electrical fans. Make sure A/C is off, lights out, battery is good. With a nice build on the engine you may even want to keep it 4x4 ;) |

THey should have marked your truck with a number with white shoe polish. That number should match up to one of the times posted on your timeslip. Each column of info is labeled with which car it's for. Take the time to learn a little bit. It will help you tremendously. Here's my best pass for comparison. Not stock: K&N FIPK, 2.5" Dynomax mandrel bent catback, 2.5" test pipe. No tune. 200K miles. I'm actually itching to go back since I've got a new LU3 crate engine installed now with about 6k miles on it now. http://www.dragtimes.com/Chevrolet-B...lip-19825.html http://www.dragtimes.com/images_time...r-Timeslip.jpg

His butt should've been asked to leave the track after the first run. You NEVER run A/C while running it at the strip. Seriously...that's f***ed up. |
