more aggressive tire
 

all,

i have a 99 s-series trailblazer 4x4. the tires on it now are pretty much street tires even though they claim to be all-terrain tires. i want something a bit more aggressive without the hum of a true 4x4 tire. i was considering the bfg at. any opinions on this tire or suggestions for a different one. keep in mind that this is my wifes ride. it mainly scoots her and our baby daughter around town. i figure 90% street/highway use and only 10% off-road fun use. what do you folks have for me?

I was very impressed with the offroad ability and low noise of the Dunlop Radial Rover A/T. With the solid center rib, they'll wear great as well. I had these on my old '97 Ram and did my share of offroading while working for my father on his farm.

I love the bridgestone Dueler A/T Nice semi-aggressive tread and very quiet on the road.

Best AT tire I've used so far has been the Yokohama Geolander AT+II. Great traction on road, especially on wet pavement. Very good in the snow and pretty decent for an all-season tire on ice. Off-road they do really good, probably the best of any AT tire. The price is right too. Only downside is they have a softer side-wall which makes them squirm a bit, but nothing too bad. One you get used to it, its not a problem (I used my Blazer as an emergency response vehicle for a fire department, if that says anything). I saw about 48K miles on these before needing new ones desperately. Around 20K miles my ball joints crapped out again and I quit rotating them. At replacement the fronts were shot, but the backs still had 50% tread left. I probably would have got 60K out of them had I kept rotating them and didn't have the BJ issue.

Yokohama released a new AT version called the Geolander AT/S. It is a bit more "street orientated" than the AT+II tires. Still looks to be ok for off-road. Its too new to really say much about right now, but so far the one person I know who has them really like them.

Since the Geos had belts showing, and the shop didn't have them in my size in stock, I switched to Bridgestone Dueler ATs. I'm not at all happy with them. Mileage (treadwear) is decent, around 42K miles before now needing replacement, but off-road traction and wet pavement traction has been pretty bad (even when new). Snow traction was iffy at times, nut that really depended on the temperature and type of snow. They also seem more prone to hydro-planing. I have heard really good things about the newer Revo version of this tire, but its not cheap.

The BFG ATs are decent, but prone to hydroplaning issues due to their tread design (no open channels for water evacuation). I've heard mixed reviews on their treadwear, but most say if you drive aggressively then that isn't the tire for you. The price of them is prohibitive IMO too.

You might want to look at them BFG again. Plenty of open channels for water evacuation.

The BFG have won more off-road races then any other tire combined. Including 20 consecutive Baja 1000 races.

I'd say they have proven thier worth. But if your only after a street tire, something else might be for you.

Oh by the way, passenger tires are squirrely under a truck carring a load, the side walls aren't designed to carry the load. If your going to use your SUV as a truck, then get truck tires. LT should be in front of the tire size.

hey Hanr...how are those BFG's on road noise?? im getting a new set of shoes for the truck soon and im starting to look at my options

the AT's have very little road noise. Even the M/T has very little road noise. If you listen to music at any volume you won't hear the BFG AT.
