2002 4.2L I6 Clatters at Startup

Son in Law has a 2002 Trailblazer with the 4.2L that clatters when starting after sitting a day or so.
I would suspect lifters going bad but dual overhead cams don't have lifters, What's going on?

Same problem on mine and solve with Motul 300v Power oil 15W50 and additive for hydraulic spring valve (Mecacyl CR-P)
