Based on cost only my guess is NO.
A 96+ is designed for the NV 3500 manual transmission.
Tomorrow we plan to fire up our 1998 engine/transmission implant for the first time.
We when from 1998 X with 5-speed behind it to 1998 W VIN's that had a 4WD auto behind it and mated it to another 1998 5-speed with 400,000 fewer miles and physically everything was bolt compatible.
I do not know if a 5-speed 4WD NV 3500 will be a direct bolt in option. I would consider buying a wreck so you have all of the change over parts required.
We found no oil pan or exhaust manifold differences between the X engine from the 2WD 5-speed and the 4WD automatic with the W VIN engine as some stated we would. experience.
