Replacing a 95 transmission

Replacing a 95 transmission
My 95 2WD Jimmy needs another transmission. I'm okay getting a used one for now. However, 1995 is an odd year for parts I've discovered.
Question: is there any mechanical reason why a transmission from a 96 - 2001 vehicle would not work? I understand that the 96+ transmissions have detatchable bell housings for instance; but does that matter? It will still mount properly to the engine on one side and the propeller shaft on the other, yes? I understand that the cooling lines have different fittings on a 96+ as well. So I just take the lines from the donor vehicle - problem solved, right?

Yes the transmission will bolt to the engine block. But there is a difference in the torque converter bolt pattern which requires a different flexplate. The different flex plate does not work without a special adaptor because the bell housing is a different depth than the older style transmissions(because the LS series engines are a bit shorter at the block/trans flange).
In other words, stick with the pre-98 trans that does not have a removable bellhousing.

I tried rebuilding my 95 trans; but either I screwed up, or it developed further issues - whichever. I'm just going to get a 96 or 97 from the boneyard - they have a return policy for transmissions that don't work.
But anyway, quick question - as I mentioned above, I know there's different cooler lines involved. The 95 has tapped-on lines while 96+ has quick-connect; that's fine, I'll just take the lines too - or buy new ones, they're not expensive. But, will I need some kind of adapters for my radiator-side fittings, or are those fittings still tap-on? Anyone know?

So I can only use a '95. But, I can use a '95 4L60E from any GM vehicle...?

yep. as long as its 2wd. if its 4wd you gotta tear the whole thing down to swap main shafts.
fullsizes will work, but mounts, minor brackets etc might be different. big deal just save your old one to swap parts
torque convertor? maybe. since its fullsize.
if i were you buy a new torque convertor. its about 150 at advance auto. google coupon codes advance auto online....you can get like 50 bucks off it and pick up in store. its nice insurance since your swappin trans. also get a new front seal and rear for the heck of it. 10 bucks. i put in a trans and said eh screw the front seal its fine...
2 weeks later...im pulling the trans in the snow in the front yard to replace a gushing seal..smh
