Default 1993 4.3 2WD Hard Cold Starting

Fora few weeks, I have had difficulting getting my S10 startedon coldmornings. It cranks and cranks and cranks...and it won't start (AARGH!). As soon as thesun begins to warm up the outside air,the Blazerstarts easily. This past Saturday, I replaced the old plug wires with new. Even with that, the Blazer refused to start yesterday morning. (It started in the afternoon when it got warmer). Any suggestions for troubleshooting the problem? Any ideas what could be the causes? Thanks in advance for your kindness and suggestions.

There's a possibility that it isn't getting enough juice from the battery. They have trouble supplying the current as the temperature goes down. I have no clue what the temperature is where you are, so I could be completely wrong. Also, I'm not sure if it will let you keep cranking it, or if it will give the typical "dead battery" crank attempts when its too cold. Might be worth a shot to just jump it in the morning and see if that does anything.

Thanks Campesino for your suggestion, but I don't think it is the battery. The starter is cranking very hard and fast. I'm beginning to wonder if it is something other than electrical (ortemperature-relatedfor that matter). May be it is fuel related. I'm wondering if it doesn't start because it has been sitting all night rather than because it is cool outside. Hmmmmm.

I am considering using some starter fluid in the morning and seeing if the S10 will start. If it does, then I will know that the problem is probably fuel related. The odd thing is that theS10 really runs great once it starts.

Any more suggestions...or things to try?

When my Blazer wouldn't start again this morning, I sprayed in some starter fluid and...waalaa, it started immediately. I previously thought it was an electrical issue. It now appears to be a fuel issue. As I mentioned before, my Blazer runs great once it starts. Can a fuel pump not work only when you are trying to start the motor...and then work fine when it is running? Wierd!

You need higher fuel pressure for initial start than to maintain.

What motor do you have? CPI (large aluminum upper intake with the throttle body near the radiator) or TBI (round sheetmetal air cleaner housing on the top of the motor)?

I have a CPI. What I learned this morning is that the engine will start if I turn the key on and off a few times (but not all the way). Evidently, this engages the electric fuel pump which is supposed to turn on for a couple seconds to inject the fuel needed to start the engine. When I do this, sometimes I can hear the whirl of the fuel pump (in the gas tank). Other times I can't (so sometimes the pump is not turning on for the two seconds). However, after multiple tries (and hearing the fuel pump turn on at least a couple times), the engine always starts now. I suspect this means my fuel pump has an intermitent failure issue...or could it be a relay or something else?

You would need to do a fuel pressure test to know further.
