Default 4x4 grinding issues

I have a 88 2.8 with the manual 4x4 shifter. When I try to shift into 4x4 in either park or neutral the transfer case will grind. If I leave the car in neutral, shut it off and shift it into either 4x4 high or low with the engine not running the 4x4 works fine (after I start the blazer again of course)

I'm not moving when I try to shift and I'm always in park or neutral so I'm not sure where the grinding could possibly be coming from.

It's not a pressing issue, at least the 4x4 works. Just a minor inconvieniance I would like fixed. I can't find anything in the Chilton book about any sensors or anything so I really don't know what would make it grind like it is.

Any ideas?

You should be able to go from 2HI to 4HI while moving and in gear. 4LO though should only be attempted with the transmission in neutral. Slightly moving will help in all cases.

Thumbs up

If it was my truck , the first thing I would do would be to check the transfer case fluid level . If it low , fill it up . If its full , change it . I would also check the engine idle RPMs . If your truck is idling too hight , it might cause this .

I dont know if these things would help , but it might be worth a look .

Let us know if ya figure it out .
