89 blazer - sat for two years + destroyed steering colum

So I got this 89 blazer farm beater and I need to figure out how to get it started. Its sat for 2 years while this guy was in jail The ignition where you put the key in is totally destroyed and most of the plastic around the steering column is broken off. Its sat for two years, has a flat tire and has a green film over the whole thing lol. I got a charge on the battery so i can beep the horn and turn the headlights on. I need to know how to get the ignition into the "on" position without it being able to turn. Also, do you think that its been sitting for to long and I should drain and change the gas and change the oil?

Yes you can get it running, for the ignition switch see the thread I linked below. This was someone who installed a pushbutton start switch. Also if you do a search on steering column repair I believe there are companies that sell a replacement collar with a new key switch to repair broken columns like yours. But if you installed the pushbutton you would not need it.

Personally I would change the gas and oil...I was in the same boat, well except the destroyed column...It might start but if the gas is bad or really gummed up it will run like crap or not at all.

HHMMM, steering column torn up, guy was in jail. was he in for car theft??

Scrapmetalbandit 09-21-2010 02:16 PM

No, I dont know what he was in jail for. His son tried to get it started. Stuck a screwdriver in it and broke the tip off in the ignition, then destroyed it trying to turn it, then ripped the column apart haha Thanks for the info guys im gonna see if i can get this thing cranking.

Here is a great "into the column" thread. Not exactly the same but almost.

Im still not really sure what i have to do. Im not trying to make this thing street legal. I just want a woods buggy, although the title is here I need something to 4x4 in. I need to know how to get it started and to my house. I just need to figure out how to get the ignition into the "on" position. Then I can bridge the starter bolts and get it moving. The steering lock is broken and the shifter moves. There is this little white thing on the left hand side that has a rod going to it. The rod wont stay in it thought, is this something I need? Sorry for the noob auto knowledge.

The rod is for the high beams if you put it in the white piece and push it toward forward (toward the front of the truck) it will click on the for the high beams.
