So I'm just replacing rear main. I got the old one off and the hausing cleaned up. Trying to remove oil pan to clean where gasket goes but can't get it past the distick tube or the pump can't really till what holding it. It's almost all the way out to. Should I just clean up the best I can and put back together? Or is there an easy way to get it out. I don't have a cherry picker and my jack is holding tranny right now

 

Likely silly question and I'm asking just in case; Have you pulled out the dip stick?

 

Yep sure have. Wondering if I should pull the tube to. I don't have a cherry picker so really can't go that route

 

Ok so I've had so many issues in this rnr rear main job. I am trying to get oil pan off so I can finish this job... Rear main is in and what I'm finding is the oil pan has two chambers and the pump screen is getting in the way and keeps slipping into that bottom chamber. I don't have a cherry picker and i have a scissor jack that came with truck. Wondering one if maybe I can put that jack on blocks and put it under where the ear for the flywheel shroud and get the motor up enough to get the pan out? Or can I unbolt the pickup tube and pull it out that way? I have my truck in a friend's driveway and said it wouldn't take me to long and it's been a month.. any help is greatly appreciated

 

Haven't done this myself, but all the manuals say that you need to pull the engine to get the oil pan all the way off on a 2wd. You could do some janky **** like this guy and undo the engine mounts/ pull a bunch of crap off the front of the engine to sketchily jack the engine up a little bit to get enough room to do what you need to do, but I don't think there's a simple solution to your problem, unfortunately.

 

I got her done. Wasnt able to get a bunch and I bet if I could get a couple more inches I might have been able to remove the pan but I got a bottle jack I found stashed and was able to get engine up enough to finish cleaning and get the gasket in. Bolted up pan in corners waiting for rtv to set and gonna get the rest done. Thank u lilqueasy but I wasn't about to tear off more stuff to do one lil thing. I appreciate your time tho.

 

Just out of curiosity - did I get that right? You have replaced the rear main crank bearing shells from underneath? Any pics to share?

 

No but I could. The bearing is on the truck and I'm about to put flexplate back on it. And yes I did all from underneath the truck
