Default 94 Starter Help

I replaced the starter on my 94 blazer, the new starter came with 2 shims and directions saying the starter should be installed 2mm from the mount. Well I did and when I start the truck now the starter makes a strange noise. Did I make a mistake installing the shims, should I take one of them out?? Should I take both out??
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would start with no shims and add as necessary to adjust the gear engagement. If no shims work, then you are set. If no shims results in grinding, then add a shim.

Starters used to come with a go/no-go block (a key-way looking thing that was thicker than it was wide) that could be used to set the gap between the starter shaft and the flex plate gear teeth so you didn't have to guess, but since you didn't mention it, it likely isn't there.

There were no shims when I took the old one off, I thought that was odd that the new one had shims with it. I will take them off and go from there. Thanks!!
