Default gas hog

I've had an 1984 S10 with a 2.8L and 4WD for almost 2 months.
This beast (Charlene) sucks gas like a big V-8. Probably worse, because she gets 14 mpg.
This is very sad, because other than that she runs good, has never stranded me and the body and interior are in excellent condition.
Today, whatever it is that's devouring gas really went wrong. She started losing speed for no reason while I was driving down the road until the best I could get out of it was 25 mph and that was downhill with the pedal to the floor.
I'm thinking whatever it is must not be too bad, because it still starts right up-it just has like no idle speed.
Someone sugessted an EGR Valve, and I've read a few things about them. Is that enough to do all this, or am I looking at deeper (ie, more expensive) problems?

Make sure you have oil in there. My dads cars head went and one of the signs were loss of power. He made it home reom work w/ the pedal to the floor and the engine runnning erratic.

Could be starving for fuel. When was the last ime fuel filter was looked at? Good luck.

Don't worry about 14 mpg...blazer=friggin' gas hog
Your lucky you're getting 14 mpg, I am getting 12mpg city, 22mpg hwy, but that's because I have to change the fpr...I have never gotten more than 17-18 mpg city...

Check spark/fuel delivery...
What to check for spark deliverylugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, coil, etc.
What to check for fuel delivery: test fuel pressure at crank and idle, fuel pump, fuel filter, carb, etc.

My $.02

Thats not that bad, With my 2.8 Fiero GT with a 5 speed i averaged 15 or 16 in town and got 27 highway. The 2.8 just isn't much an economical V6.
