Default Gas tank cover

After putting in the new fuel pump, I just want to leave the plastic cover off.
Any harm in this?
Car will never be driven off-road.

It won't hurt anything to leave it off, even though you will never be offroad.

But I question your choice as to why? As low as the chances are, you could run over something that could possibly kick up and hit/puncture the tank. Yes, I've seen it happen before.
