Default Installed Distributor and engine will not start

Hello everyone. I have a '87 S-10 with a 2.8 v6. The engine will crank but will not start after I reinstalled my distributor. When I removed the distributor I forgot to mark the rotor. Anyway, I used the "thumb" method and a marked wire to find TDC. Reinstalled the distributor by aligning the rotor and base to the #1 plug wire post on the cap. Used the firing order provide by online resources, I attached all plug wires. The engine will crank but will not start. I am getting an occasional backfire through the carb. Hmmm....replaced the ignition coil this did not help. I would appreciate any help to get her going again.

I would double check everything. First make sure you on TDC (Comp. Stroke) mark the number one plug on the cap. Remove and make sure rotor is aligned with the number one location on the cap. I would double and tripple check the firing order. The firing order is usually stamped on the intake manifold. Verify you have spark at the plugs. Verify you have fuel. You could try and pour a small amout of fuel directly in the carb and see if it starts. (Fuel, Spark and Timing) if all are in order the car should start.

Default tdc on compression

I hate when that happens, if its sputtering you have the dist 180 off find tdc with the timing marks and if it dosent start turn it 180 degrees the slot on the oil pump will only let it go in 2 ways also check the firing order make sure you know the rotation of the dist. I made that dumb mistake once and two hrs. later I was kicking myself in the a@@

Dizzy is 180* out, like ^^ said. Flip it around and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the replies. I will give it another try tomorrow. BTW, the 2.8 v6 has odd numbered cylinders on the passenger side and even numbered ones on the driver's side? Firing order is 123456?

Not sure what I need to do if the dizzy is 180. I wired the dizzy according to chilton's guide. BTW, I am pretty sure I have TDC but there were no marks on the flywheel to verify. As stated previously I used the thumb in hole method and a wire to find TDC. Had the wife bump the starter several times to find the highest point. Not sure what else to do. Thanks for the help.
