We have a 1991 Blazer 4x4. In December the oil coolant hose was leaking and we had it replaced; we also had a tune-up done to pass DEQ standards.

We had a broken tie rod that we had to wait to replace due to finances. The tie rod caused rubbing on the tires and we assumed that was the issue when going uphill. We just spent several hundred dollars replacing the tie rod (also had a broken ball joint replaced), but the blazer still is having trouble maintaining speed up hills. This is my husband's car, and he says it also has an occasional backfire on the hill to our house.

We cannot afford any more major repairs, and I was wondering if anyone had some type of trouble shooting option we could try before inquiring with a mechanic?

 

any ses lights on?

did you guys check the fuel pressure?

when was the last tune up done to the truck?

and do you get a bogging engine going up the hill by your house ?

 

Sounds like there is a timing issue if its backfiring. Take it by a shop and ask them if they could check timing for you,they shouldnt charge you anything,if they do it shouldnt be much. It takes maybe 10 minutes. It should be set at 0 degree's. Timing being off can cause bogging,loss of power,backfiring etc. If thats not it then have the fuel pressure checked. 91 s10 needs 11-13 psi to run good.
