Lift up the front end on stands and have someone wiggle the steering wheel while you look for play in the steering components... They do wear out. The good news is that most of the parts are dirt cheap. You can put a whole new steering linkage on for about 200 bucks. Thats an Idler, Pitman, 2 inners and 2 outer tie rods. If you leave it its going to be hard on your tires and will cause them to wear out too soon and get abnormal wear patterns.

Check the rag joint on the steering shaft.
