no rear brakes, ABS engaged on freeway

My rear brakes stopped working for some reason. We have tried to fix them 2-3 times in the last year or more. ABS does not work as well. Just recently the anti-lock light has turned on.
While driving home from work Friday, my seatbelt light would come on for a second or two and then turn off. It eventually would stay on longer as the car would "jolt". I'm guessing this is the the ABS trying to engage, causing the seatbelt light to flicker. I just barely made it off the freeway, no thanks to all the 'friendly' drivers nearby, before the ABS kicked in completely. After pulling to the side, the car stalled out I'm guessing. It did not act up after this, allowing me to make it home.
[ul][*]If I tried to fix this myself, what would be the best place to start looking?[*]What kind of cost might I incur to have a garage fix this, on average? Assuming back brakes and whatever is wrong with ABS.

Check with your local dealer for this safety bulletin to see if it has been done to your truck. They will need to check your VIN# against their database. Then it will be between you and the dealer to work out a solution.
