remote oil filter elimiation
I believe it is for a 2wd if you use a short oil filter but on the 4wd's there isn't enough room. Someone else can verify that but I'm pretty sure it's what I found when I was looking into the same thing.
EDIT: Just realized this was in 1st gen tech I'm not sure if the answer will be the same. Some food for thought though

The main reason for the relocation of the filter is to make the job of replacing it easier and to allow for a longer filter, in turn increasing the oil flow.
Is there any specific reason you want to remove the relocator? If not, just leave it where it is. The tubing to and from the filter will help cool the oil a little, and it will be a lot easier to change the filter when it's needed.
