Seriously What Now

Honestly id clean that EGR before you go any further original cat and exhaust on a 94 isnt unheard of (my entire exhaust is original at 138,000 miles) and so far its still fine (couple pinholes starting in the muffler now but eh it can wait a cpl weeks) as I understand the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system it redistrubutes exhaust gases to help control cylinder temperature and contributes to the control of air/fuel mixture (someone correct me if im wrong please) $7 for a screened gasket and the 15 minutes it takes to clean that EGR beats $140 for a new cat.

ok hopefully you guys did not forget about me, So I talked to my friend today and this is what I got " the mechanic looked at it thought it was the cat so he took out the o2 (before the cat) and it seemed to run better so instead of throwing parts at it I know u are trying to save money he hollowed out the cat. It got better but did not fix it. He also tried the map sensor nothing the tech said the egr was brand new (said he took it off) so it looks like to him that its the spider" I asked him about the fuel pressure and he said the readings do not always show a bad spider or nut kitt. I told him wrap me up and i will take her home tomo as I do not have the funds for that type of repair right now considering 400 plus in parts and 8hr labor. What do you guys think? I am going to get it home tomo and take the egr off and clean it again just to make sure, but other than that what else can I do before I determine if i need to break into the plenum and attack the spider and nut kit. Thanks In Advance for all the help.

spider and nut kit is very easy (but far from cheap) but if the pressure is not dropping i would not expect that to be the problem. Just for the hell of it pull your oil dipstick out does it smell like gas at all?

Even a new looking EGR could be severely clogged. Why not do the work yourself? Did that tech replace the gasket with a new, screened gasket?

Yeah I plan on doing the work my self I just wanted it out of the "shop" As far as what he did with the egr I am unsure I had just purchased the screened gasket and it was sitting in my front seat So I will find out tomo. He said he pulled it off and cleaned it. Outsyder..... lol funny thing about the dip stick (sorry for the side track) but one of the thing with it was that they put a starter in and put the big wire upside down and it arcked against the dip stick tube so i can not pull the stick out and second most, i can actually pull the tube in and out from the block lol. Once I figure out this issue i plan on replacing it. would pulling the plugs have the same effect? or the fact that it has been running and crap the way it has that they will likely smell like gas anyway.

Is your mechanic a one armed man or something? 8hrs to replace the spider/nut-kit...!!! That is just robbery. I would expect a 1st time novice to be able to do it in that amount of time, not an experienced mechanic even if he is doing it for the first time.
And another contradiction to your "mechanic". Yes, a fuel pressure test, specifically a leak down test, will show you if you have a bad FPR or another leak in the system.
I am VERY surprised that your "mechanic" would violate federal law by willfully hollowing out the catalytic converter as a diagnostic step...

Ok for clarification I have a friend (some what) that owns a shop he had one of his guys looking at it. As far as the 8 hours YES I AGREE INSANE but I was told that is what the book calls for. I asked him about the cat thing if he suggested cat no cat on that year if i would be affected... I live in FL no emissions. But did not expect him to do that as I know the fines and things can be very steep. I would have taken it to one of the fly by night muffler shops ect ect. swartlkk as far as the pressure test maybe you can be more informitive in this area, I did a test on my own already gauge on key foward not running left key foward shot straight up to 60 gradually dropped to 40ish then back up to 60 slowly but did not drop after that and def did not go under 40? any thoughts? Also could any of this be caused by the icm.
Going to pick it up tonight and do the egr but would like to have her on the road by the weekend THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

The pressure should not drop below 52psi, ever. How does it hold after you turn the key off?
