Default Transmission going?

This morning on the way to work my 94 s-10, 4.3 Automatic started making a whining noise. I got off the highway and noticed that I wasn't able to go more than about 30mph no matter how much gas I gave it. I barely made it to work. Now it will go sometimes, but other times it seems like it is stuck in neutral. I think that the tranny is going. I changed the fluid and filter in it about a year ago. I've only driven 5000K miles since then and haven't had any problems till today. What do you guys think? New tranny? Or is there something else that I may want to diagnose first? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Check the fluid level and the condition of the fluid. Its possible you have lost some fluid or else you may be able to diagnose the problem if the fluid is dirty or doesn't smell right.

As an update to this issue: I checked the tranny fluid. It is full but I did notice some dirt on the dipstick above the fluid level. The dirt didn't appear to be in the fluid itself, just above it. The strange part is, if you let the truck sit for say 5 or 10 minutes, you will be able to drive it for about a mile or so before it acts up and eventually won't go. It acts as if it is in neutral. Then, if you shut the truck down and wait a while, you will be able to go another mile or so. It's like it is slipping when the fluid gets warm. Does this sound like anything that has happened to anyone else? What was the problem? Thanks.
