Default Used Spider - Clean Up??

I picked up a used spider from a 94 Bravada only $20 bucks. Its covered in a thick oily gunk. The inside of the Intake was very dirty with the same gunk. Some puddling of something in the back corners. But I got the spider to just try it and see if it helps solve my starting problem. If it does, then I will spend the money to get a new spider. I tried the Fuel pressure relay yesterday that was suggested to me and it didnt help. So I'm trying one thing at a time.

But I have a few questions.

When I pulled the intake off the Bravada, I smelled gas right away. Is that normal? Sign of a bad spider?

I looked at the tips of the injectors and all them look clean/clear/shiny and still wet with gas. Hopefully a good sign right?

What can I clean the intake and the spider with to remove that oily gunk? Carb Cleaner? Seafoam?

Would dipping the injectors into some Injector cleaner help or damage them?

Thanks

If you smelled gas when you pulled the plenum off to take that spider that is a bad sign - should not smell gas unless it was leaking, but maybe the regulator was leaking on it and you can use your old regulator. That black stuff allover it is normal. I used a junkyard spider in mine and it works great. If your injector is leaking, it would make it hard to start when warm. Cold starts should be allright cause the engine has time for the gas that leaks to evaporate.

Did you test your fuel pressure on your truck and on the donor the spider came from??? That test will tell you if it was worth taking or worth changing. Your pressure should hold, if it drops at all then its a bad sign. Test your fuel pressure cause throwing parts at a problem is never a good way to fix something. Diagnosis is the key to saving money.

If you are going to buy a new one get the one from injectorwarehouse.com cause its the cheapest one and everyone always posts the link to it on these threads.

If you want to clean your used injector, just stick it in a pail full of gas overnight with a lid on it. Carb cleaner would work too, or combustion chamber cleaner, but the gas bath will eat all that soot off it just fine and only cost you a dollar or so. I would not mess with the tips on it at all, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

yeah my starting is opposite, hard to start when cold, easy when warm.

What can I use to clean the intake to get rid of that gunk?

Are you going to take the intake off? Cause I woudlnt try to clean it up at all. Its normal for all that black crud to be there. And if you try cleaning it up its all going to wash down into the crankcase. If you remove the intake you can clean it with whatever you like, but then you need new intake gaskets and such. I say just leave it, and clean out the injector holes with a toothbrush and carb cleaner so you can make sure the little O rings down there are still in one peice... That is not the intake, its the upper plenum, and its supposed to be dirty. The intake is down the 6 holes you see. There should be some slime in them too, again, just leave it alone and seafoam it later.

my mistake on calling it the Intake. Ok, I'll spray some carb cleaner around the spider holes and use a toothbrush to clear the path for me to push the new ones into.

I definatly want to Seafoam it, especially if its that dirty. Which Vacuum line do I use to get the Seafoam into the plenum?
