Default What the hell is this thing?

I was driving today and while at a stop i saw a small amount of smoke coming from my hood and the cab had a distincive smell of brunt oil. i pulled over and popped the hood and saw oil was leaking from this one weird cable thing (look at pictures below) onto the ignition coil and headers then dripping onto the exhaust manifold, witch was burning it and making the smoke and burning smell. The weird thing is that it was only dripping for a little bit and then stopped and all is well. i just want to kno what it is and if i shold be worried it is dripping so much oil.

From the pictures I would say a breather of some sort possibly front diff.,trans or,transfe case. I would try to follow that tube down and see where it leads.Sorry i could not be a better help.

Hmm well I followed it down and it seems like it's going all the way down under the truck. I can't get under the truck tonight but will do it tomorrow to see where it leads to but if it's going all the way down there I would assume it connects to the tranny and the oil/residue from there smells the same as the transmisson fluid. Should I be worried if it is indeed spitting up transmission fluid?

x2 on the t-case vent. You likely have a bad seal on the front of the t-case which is allowing the transmission to push ATF into the transfer case. Get it fixed ASAP before it pushes ATF through the vacuum system!

First, pull the fill plug on the transfer case. It is the upper plug on the back of the transfer case. If ATF pours out, the seal is bad and you will have to remove the transfer case. The seal is located on the front of the transfer case.

Thanks for the help guys. I will take a look at the tcase this summer and might as well do a transmission flush as well. It def is tranny fluid leaking out but it only happened 1 time and it was not much at all so I'm not to worried right now

In your original post did you say that it was a cable? The t-case vent line is a hose. And if you want your t-case to survive I don't think you can wait until summer to fix it unless you're going to park it 'til then.
